FlexToll
FlexToll develops, produces and markets a revolutionary Road User Charging System for all kinds of RUC applications based on fully proven GSM technology. FlexToll’s patent pending technology and solutions offer a smart, easy and reliable RUC system based on the existing infrastructure. Unlike other GSM solutions, the system does not depend on triangulation and is map provider independent. FlexToll is currently developing GNSS/GSM solutions. Targeted customer applications include cities, road networks, toll plazas, etc.

   

 
Mookie
Mookie was founded in the spring of 2007 with one clear business goal: to be the obvious choice for creative and high-quality film on the web. It’s done by providing talented and passionate filmmakers, in every corner of the globe, with an opportunity to share their interest and knowledge with like minded people, as well as the possibility to work with clients they would otherwise not have access to. In short, Mookie offers its customers an effective and innovative distribution channel for film productions — all in a professional service framework that secures timely deliveries of ideas and production material for moving images in the digital channels.
 

Neo Technology
Neo Technology offers the Neo DB, a radical new database management system modeled after the structure of the human brain. The system is superior to legacy databases for applications that handle interconnected, dynamic and rapidly changing information such as protein interactions, social networks or web 2.0/3.0 content. In these scenarios, Neo DB dramatically improves performance — on the order of 1,000 times — and cuts development costs in half. The Neo DB is robust and has been in 24/7 deployment for four years at
several customer sites.
 

Oricane
Oricane reduces the energy required to run the Internet. Over the last seven years, the company has developed green software technology for the Internet which has resulted in significant breakthroughs with the potential of reducing the global consumption of electric power by more than 1%. The goal is to minimize the environmental impact of the Internet’s explosive growth and facilitate “a green upgrade” to IPv6, the next generation communication protocol. Oricane’s green software technology is built on patent-protected innovations that dramatically improve decision process efficiency. The most extreme example of decision intensive software is web search where virtually all information stored on the Internet impacts the task at hand. For Network Search Engines, the power consumption can be reduced by 95 percent.
 

Penny
Penny has developed the C-More Interactive Glasses, a patent pending, interactive head mounted display using the latest P-Oled display technology, motion tracking system and a tension sensor command button solution. All persons with eye sight — independent of the physical capability, work task, work place or computer environment — can use C-More Interactive Glasses. Penny’s product has a world wide market in the following segments: industry, military and secret service, rescue, health care, computer gaming and handicapped.In 2007, the company was ranked a Number One Candidate for cooperation by the US Army and other defense department has shown an interest. In late March, the solution will be presented to the Department of Defense and the USSOCOM in Stockholm, Sweden.
 



Portendo
Portendo provides tools for combating terrorism leading to a safer society. The company has developed and markets threat detection equipment for homeland security, military and commercial security organizations. Portendo’s patent-pending technology provides quick and reliable detection of explosives, warfare agents and hazardous chemicals. The detection is made at a safe distance from the threat object, thus potentially saving the lives of professionals and civilians in high-risk environments. Portendo has long been collaborating with several defense industry customers and high-ranking research institutes, including the Swedish Defence Research Agency, and was founded in 2005.
 

Squace
The Squace mobile browser makes Internet surfing, searching and sharing as easy on a mobile device as on any landline device. The freeware browser:

  • Has a unique user interface which drastically reduces loading time and clicking
  • Enables surfing, searching, and sharing on ordinary phones - without typing
  • Using open Internet standards, allows users to personalize the Internet and create sites in minutes, an Internet service in a few hours, and an intranet in a few days
  • Radically lowers barriers for content providers to go mobile
  • Uses a business model based on sponsored links, similar to Google Adwords

Mobile Internet access is still too complicated and slow. By removing critical obstacles for content providers and advertisers, Squace unleashes the mobile Internet, enabling huge commercial benefits.
 

Stix
Stix is a new layer on top of the Internet, which makes every site your own community. You can add texts, pictures, videos and more on top of any page you visit, and make it available for your friends. Express your thoughts with note or a picture. Your friends, even the whole world, will see what you added when they go to the same page. Stix is a revolutionary new medium and a completely new type of community. Stix can be used with or without a browser plugin, and it has a strong technology base and proven mechanisms to spread.

AnSyn
AnSyn provides a unique platform for design of analog integrated circuits that enables increased productivity, improved performance and a secure path to high yield. The company’s products target significant bottlenecks where currently no alternative solutions are available. The market for electronic design software is growing annually by 11% and analog design automation is one of the most important growth areas. AnSyn’s plans to license its software tools in a market estimated at annual revenues of $200 million. The company was voted the best start-up at the 2007 SAME (Sophia Antipolis MicroElectronics). Several global semiconductor companies are currently evaluating AnSyn’s technology.

 
Signal Processing Devices Sweden
Signal Processing Devices offers patented algorithms for enhancing the performance of A/D-converters. Delivered as silicon IP, these algorithms enable manufacturers to build A/D-solutions with twice the performance at half the cost. The product is used today to enable new applications such as multi carrier GSM receivers. With traditional development A/D converter performance is doubled every five to eight years. SP Devices offers an algorithm delivered as silicon IP that doubles the performance of any A/D-converter. The algorithm works with current as well as future converters. Specifically, with future higher performance A/D converters, SP Devices will offer a doubling of performance.

Diamorph
Diamorph has developed advanced ceramic materials with remarkable properties such as,

Diamorph develops and sells products and licenses based on its proprietary technology. The company has established collaborations with several world leading industrial corporations that have specific product needs and market expertise. Diamorph is presently building its first pilot plant for commercial production of a set of ceramic components for wind energy. Other products in the medical and the energy sector are under development and will be presented at the seminar. The company is cash-flow positive thanks to customer financed development collaborations.
 

OrganoClick
OrganoClick develops, markets and sells functionalized, environmentally friendly cellulose based materials for use in the paper and packaging-, textile-, wood- and biotechnological industries. With the company’s patented technology for modification of cellulose, materials can be developed such as water proof paperboard materials for liquid packaging boards, water resistant cotton textiles and new means of protecting wood from deterioration.

Since the start in 2006, the company has collaborated with partners from several industry sectors on seven development projects. OrganoClick currently has five employees and a positive cash-flow generated from its customer-financed development projects. The first products are estimated to reach the market in 2009.
 

 
Life Sciences Companies         (top)

 

Arterion
Arterion develops artificial grafts for replacement of small diameter vessels in peripheral and coronary applications such as bypass surgery. The company essentially instructs cellulose-producing microbes to manufacture cellulose tubes with superior mechanical and clinical properties. With from-the-start clinical collaboration, Arterion has secured over two years of direct feedback from renowned thoracic and vascular surgeons. Microbial derived cellulose as such is already approved for medical devices. Arterion has performed several animal models to expand the range of clinical data towards blood applications and the first long term study in sheep just passed six months. Arterion is now looking for investments and collaboration with international actors to continue development.

 

BioChromix
BioChromix strategy is to commercialize unique and patented methods for in vivo diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). At present there are no specific tests to diagnose AD; it may only be diagnosed on physical and neurological exams. Current therapy for AD only provides symptomatic relief for a short period of time, 6 to 18 months, and in vivo imaging is unspecific. BioChromix develops methods for early diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease, preferably before symptoms break. Future development shall also lead to superior methods for protein quality control, in vivo imaging and point of care solutions.

 

Calmark Sweden
Calmark Sweden AB develops and commercializes systems for micro volume, rapid detection of cell damage markers. The products are aimed at point of care use in acute and intensive care. The first clinical application is the Calmark Perinate for perinatal monitoring of the physiological status of the foetus during delivery.

Worldwide, newborn birth asphyxia annually claims more than 920,000 lives. There is currently no satisfactory method to monitor if a baby is exposed to asphyxia during delivery. Calmark Perinate determines cell damage markers from organs affected before the brain is damaged. This will result in a reduced number of unnecessary caesarean sections as well as fewer babies developing brain damage due to oxygen deficiency.
 

 

Curictus
Curictus AB is a medical device company with proprietary haptics technology applied in home-based rehabilitation for stroke patients. The technology provides efficient, motivational and dramatically cost-effective stroke rehabilitation.The system is designed to provide a means of continuing rehabilitation after the patient has left the hospital. It incorporates a semi-immersive workbench with a 3D stereographic display using shutter glasses, haptic virtual games, the patient workstation and the back-end support for tele-rehabilitation. The haptic equipment can produce the sense of gravity, friction and elasticity in a simulated three-dimensional environment.The company is also investigating treatment for CP, TBI, PTSD, Alzheimer and Parkinson’s disease, among other conditions.

 

Dignitana
Patient hair loss is a severe stress factor and considered the most severe side effect of chemotherapy. Dignitana has invented and patent-protected DigniCap, a medical device for preventing hair-loss in chemotherapy patients through controlled, reliable cooling of the scalp. DigniCap is used in 30 leading clinics by over 100 users mainly in Scandinavia. There is post market data with proven success for 2,300 patients. The company has filed with the FDA.Dignitana’s business idea is to develop, manufacture and market state of the art patented medical devices within hypothermia for both oncology and stroke. Clinical studies with stroke patients have also started at a university hospital in Sweden.

 

Fungea
Fungea develops and commercializes innovative diagnostic tests for fungal infections, especially for women. The solutions are based on uniquely sensitive and specific monoclonal antibodies. The system will help women to easily and correctly diagnose vaginal candida infections and enables infection clinics to diagnose life-threatening deep infections.Candida vaginal infections are both very common and difficult to diagnose. In less than 50% of all treated patients the symptoms are caused by other types of infection. Bedside tests for candida infections will help women make a rapid and correct diagnosis, thereby reducing the huge overuse of antimycotic drugs, unnecessary capital spending and the risk for drug resistant microbes.Deep fungal infection diagnosis is time consuming with very narrow margins for the very ill patients. The diagnostic kit provides an answer within hours and will be the first product to the market.
 

Medfield
Medfield Diagnostics develops medical devices for safer diagnostics in health care. The company is sprung out of Chalmers University of Technology in Göteborg which has a long tradition of microwave systems research for diagnostics. Compared to other diagnostic techniques such as x-rays and ultrasound, microwaves are more sensitive to differences in water content which has key advantages in several diagnostic areas. The first application to be commercialised is an instrument used in neurology and intensive care units to enable early detection of stroke type and to monitor stroke patients after treatment. The first set of clinical trials is planned in 2008 at Sahlgrenska University Hospital.

Aurorum Business Incubator (ABI) is located in Luleå, Sweden. Most companies are spin-offs from Luleå Technical University. Well known technologies originating from the university are the Luleå Algorithm for routing look-ups and the Sing Around method for ultra sonic flow measurement.During the last two years, eight startups with a total portfolio valuation of $28 million have been mentored. Several companies are now looking for VC partners that can contribute funds and knowledge for international growth.In 2007, there have been two notable exits from Aurorum:

  • Google acquired Marratech AB for $18 million
  • Cambridge Silicon Radio CSR, acquired Nordnav AB for $75 million


Inova
Inova is a business incubator supporting unique business concepts having major growth potential. By carefully selecting, examining and analyzing ideas, Inova can come up with strong and unique companies run by outstanding entrepreneurs. After four years of operation, KD has 40 portfolio companies in early development. Eight companies are in clinical trials and two have launched products internationally.

 

LEAD
LEAD is a business incubator supporting the development of unique and innovative start-ups with high growth potential in the life sciences and information technologies, primarily microelectronics and visualization. LEAD sources its deals from Linköping University (LiU), governmental and military research institutes and the surrounding industries. Using a quality assured process managed by seasoned business coaches, LEAD supports start-ups for a three year period. The process is designed to prepare the companies for sustainable growth. Today there are 20 LEAD companies in the process with an admittance rate of 10 new companies every year. As of mid-2007, the two business incubators from the cities Linköping and Norrköping joined forces, adopting the name LEAD – LiU Entrepreneurship and Development.

 


Sahlgrenska
The Sahlgrenska Science Park offers an incubator for life science innovations in the greater Göteborg area. Incubator activities at the park cover the earliest phases of development and form the foundation for commercial advancement. The incubator provides entrepreneurs and innovators with the structure and support necessary to build a commercially viable enterprise. The success is made possible by the support of local business growth experts from the regional network and business community. Umeå Biotech Incubator AB
Umeå Biotech Incubator AB and the Uminova Innovation AB provide business support to prospective entrepreneurs. The Umeå Biotech Incubator assists in the founding and early growth of biotech businesses from the best university research. The incubator also offers access to advanced laboratory facilities. Strong life science research in combination with early financing through the local venture capital company Uminova Invest AB, often together with co-investors, have made the success possible.

 

Uminova Innovation AB
